Located at the northern part of Changsha, with the exact coordinates at 28°13′ north latitude and 112°57′ east longitude, Kaifu district is at the eastern bank of the Xiangjiang River and the southeastern junction of the Liuyang River and Xiangjiang River. It borders Changsha county and Furong district in the east, Yuelu district in the west, Wangcheng district in the north, and Tianxin district in the south.

The terrain gradually slopes from the southeast to the northwest. The total land area is 188 square kilometers, of which the urban area is 65 square kilometers and the cultivated area is 3.307 thousand hectares.

Kaifu District is in the subtropical monsoon humid climate zone featuring four distinct seasons, with mild climate and abundant precipitation. The annual average temperature in Kaifu District is 17.2 °C, and the annual accumulated temperature is 5,457 °C, with the average annual precipitation reaching 1,358.6-1,552.5 mm.

In Kaifu district, summer and winter last longer than spring and autumn, with about 118-127 days in summer, 117-122 days in winter, 61-64 days in spring and 59-69 days in autumn.

The temperature in spring changes greatly, and there are many rainy days in the early summer. Days with high temperature in autumn are long, and severe weather in winter is rare. From late March to mid-May, a continuous rainy days with low temperature will last for a long time when the warm and cold air interweave. From late May, the temperature will increase significantly. The average temperature in summer is above 30 °C, lasting for 85 days, with about 30 days with the temperature higher than 35 °C. After late September, the weather is warmer in the daytime, with precipitation declining gradually. From late November to the mid-March of the following year, the cold days with average temperature below 0 °C are very short. January is the coldest month, with monthly average temperature 4.4 °C-5.1 °C. The crops can live through the winter and grow slowly.

Endowed with 30,000 mu (20 square kilometers) of water area and 75 kilometers of bank lines, Kaifu District has abundant waterfront and green ecological resources for it has five rivers flowing through and ten lakes. The District is dotted with parks, such as the Hunan Martyrs Park and the Moon Lake Park in the urban area and the Xiufeng Mountain and Eyang Mountain Park in the new area. Its forest coverage rate has reached 46%.
